Gillian Strutt
Artist's
Statement:
I grew up in Sussex and throughout my childhood
I painted the wild flowers that I found growing on the South Downs.
I have retained my love for nature and, through my art, seek to
reflect my awe and respect by faithfully representing the spirit
of natural objects.
I graduated with a Fine Art degree from Middlesex
University where I concentrated on painting, sculpture and photography.
Since then I have specialized in painting with water colour, making
compositions from natural forms such as flowers, plants and stones.
My botanical paintings concentrate on depicting the character,
detail, colour, texture and form of a plant. I prefer to paint
from life at home as this gives more time and a controlled environment
that allow me to focus on the detail and convey the essence of
a plant. Painting, for me, is very meditative, enjoyable and totally
absorbing. My aim is to capture a moment in time in the life of
a flower and portray its beauty, magic and fragility. I use a combination
of wet in-wet, dry brush, layers and glazes of paint to achieve
a quality of luminosity and delicacy. I have exhibited my paintings
locally in Sussex.
I work by commission for original artwork and
have originals, limited edition prints and greetings cards of my
work.
